10hp - julius caesar final evaluation

So I decided against giving any more quizzes or essays on Julius Caesar.  I'd instead like to find a more creative way to assess what you've learned.

I you (alone or in a group) to design your own project that shows what you know of Julius Caesar.  The project will be worth 100 points towards your "Project/Presentation" grade.

I also want you to grade and evaluate each others' work.  This will be a 20 point follow-up assignment in the category of "Teamwork".

The project can take many forms:
-acting a scene
-writing a scene
-writing a paper
-creating a website or document
-making a presentation
-group or individual
-anything else you can think up

No matter what you choose, your project must include the following:
1. Ethos, Logos, and Pathos
2. Multiple references to Julius Caesar (amount unspecified--you need to show me that you know the play inside and out)
3. At least one Theme from the Shakespeare After All article on Julius Caesar

Also: no matter what you choose,  we will need to create a Rubric so that the class can assess what you know.  To do this, go to http://rubistar.4teachers.org/ and find a rubric for the type of project you wish to do.  Print this rubric out and bring it to me.

For homework: post a comment/response to this blog with any suggestions for:
1. Topics to cover
2. Types of projects

NOTE:
Julius Caesar dies Nov. 9th.  That means I won't be teaching any more lessons on Caesar after that time.  The next two weeks we'll focus on helping you write your "Exploring the Mind through Language" paper, which is due Nov. 23.  However, I expect that many of you will continue presenting past Nov. 9th.  I'm flexible on the due date for this project.

  1. I'd prefer for the project to be individual. Group projects too often end up being done by only one or two members, at least mainly, and it is hard, therefore, to give points fairly- at least, that has been my experience.

I like the idea of writing a scene. I also like the idea of a presentation, where you develop an original idea and explain it to the rest of the class. I would enjoy either of these. All in all, I'm much relieved that we're doing a project. I'm all essayed out.

  2. I really like the idea on doing the project on incorporating some kind of characterization analysis. I don't care if its individual or not. I really think the characters and their actions are worth studying though.

  3. I think a good idea of what to do would be to make a video of one of the scenes or acts in Julius Caeser. I think it would be a good idea to do this is a group and to present it to the class along with a paper with examples of ELP in our video and our groups interpretation of the theme. It would also be nice if the video was a modernized version of the play taking place in present day.

After reading what Caitlin said I would say that i partially agree with her because I think we have all had a group project were there is someone who just slacks off. In my opinion we should have something in order to prevent someone like this from taking advantage of the group. My idea is that we could fill out a paper rating how well the group worked together overall and then rate each group member on how well we think they worked with comments on why we chose what we chose. I also think that in order to prevent someone from pressuring others in the group into giving them a good rating, the individual section should not be shown to other group members.

I also agree when Caitlin said it was a releif to not have to do an essay because I am also quiz, test, and "essayed out"

  4. i think there should be an option of being in a group, because it motivates students to do their work. i think the class shouldn't be limited to one way of doing the project instead we should be able to do an array of projects and students could do what fit there ideas best. also a single project shouldn't be limited to just one of the ways, instead they should be able to use a couple so they can get there message across and fulfill the requirements.

  5. I personally believe you should have the option of an individual or group project, because either way you can learn differnet skills through it.
Another suggestion for the project is not acting a scene, but acting as a teacher creating a fun lesson to teach to the class, to show what you have learned about the text.

  6. I like the idea of writing or acting out a scene. I also think that we should be able to choose b/w doing these in a group and writing a paper individually. It would also be helpful to try Eddie's idea.

  7. Yes, I agree with julian and cristina that we should be able to choose what we would like to to (individual or group) because either way we will be showing what we have learned. We should pick the way to do the project the way it best fits us. Whether that be acting, papers, reports, etc.26!

  8. I think that we shold write out a play or record a video of it, but in the groups that we choose, because if we work with our close peers, it'll be a better enviornment and we'll probably work more efficiently.

  9. In my opinion, what would be interesting would not be writing a new scene in Julius Caesar, but re-writing a current scene to produce different outcomes. You could re-write a scene so Brutus wins over the plebeians, not Antony, or have a scene where Cassius fails to persuade Brutus.
You wouldn't have to re-write the whole plot, just the outcome of that scene, or even just a crucial point in the scene.
This would be hard to do in groups, so it would have to be individual.
This would really help us realize the reasons and motivations behind events and people in Julius Caesar. It would help us understand the way Shakespeare sets up the story, and how character features and events propel the plot.
It would also let us exercise our creative parts of the brain, and let us create a story.

  10. I believe that some people work better on their own, or in a group. It should be up to the individual.
If we were to make a video, or write out a scene, it should be our interpretation of it. Another possibility would be to have us interpret it as if the scene was from a different era, like all of the characters were cowboys, and how they would say it, and portray the character.
Or if you gave us the beginning to a scene we would be able to finish the scene however we see fit (of course there will be a word count requirement).
I believe that some people work better on their own, or in a group. It should be up to the individual.
Whichever project we decide on, we should be able to create an amalgam of a few projects.

  11. we did a project in ms andersons class last year where we made a modern movie idea for romeo and juliet. It was a fun and educating project. We should do something like that for the project. Some topics could be the private vs public life, omens/superstition and ELP its kai btw

  12. i like the idea of doing a group project as well as doing some sort of character analysis too and how the characters relate to ELP. Also doing a presentation to show the character analysis like brutus vs. antony or like kai said the private vs public

  13. Some of my friends did this project last year for Romeo and Juliet where they acted out a scene(s) but made it slightly more modern. I think it would be great if we could do that AND present the class with some in-depth character analysis of the characters in the scene(s). Group/individual should be up to the individual

  14. emily davies,
hey mr. surrago. I like the idea of a process paper or some sort of poster and a paper. I don't like presentations so I thought that would be better for me.
    Thanks

I really like the test idea, and I'm probably going to stick with it. I'm not much of a presentation/ speaking person so I'll definitely have to ask you for help on those parts (for the lesson plan). I agree with some of the people that have posted: Group presentations don't work out 47% of the time, because 1 or 2 people end up doing all the work (I've had experience with this).
